From Washington – According to research in the journal Stroke, the risk for stroke among women increases with each cigarette smoked. Researchers assessed the stroke risk of women aged 15 to 49 and found that the risk was 2.2 times higher in those who smoked 1 to 10 cigarettes a day, 4.3 times higher in those who smoked 21 to 39 cigarettes a day, and 9.1 times higher in those who smoked two packs or more a day, compared to nonsmokers. From Manitoba – According to research in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, drugs used to treat acid reflux may increase the risk of fractures in those with osteoporosis. In a study of 16000 people with osteoporosis, researchers found that those who took a type of drug called proton pump inhibitors were four times more likely to suffer a hip fracture. However, these results were only found in those who took the drugs for seven or more years. And finally, from Boston – According to research presented at the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association, stress and anxiety can worsen allergy attacks. In a study of 28 people with a history of hay fever and seasonal allergies, researchers found that those who experienced a stressful event exhibited a significantly more serious allergic reaction when subjected to a skin prick test. In those that were highly stressed, this heightened sensitivity to allergens lingered for a full day. For Insidermedicine in 60, I’m Dr. Susan Sharma.
